Ground vibration from blasting is a primary concern in open-pit mining operations and is managed through careful blast design — including the selection of appropriate explosive types, charge weights, delay timing, burden and spacing, and stemming length — to reduce the peak particle velocity (PPV) at sensitive receptor locations such as residential buildings, heritage structures, and process plant foundations. Regulatory limits for blast vibration PPV at residential structures typically range from 5 to 25 mm/s, depending on the jurisdiction, soil conditions, and building type. Vibration control in the context of machinery and equipment involves the use of anti-vibration mounts, flexible couplings, vibration-damping materials, dynamic balancing of rotating components, and structural isolation to reduce the transmission of vibration to adjacent structures and personnel. Whole-body vibration (WBV) and hand-arm vibration (HAV) experienced by operators of heavy equipment and hand-held tools are occupational health hazards regulated under most mining health and safety legislation, and control measures include the selection of low-vibration equipment, provision of vibration-damping seating, job rotation, and monitoring of worker vibration exposure levels. In underground gold and diamond mining, vibration control during blasting must also protect nearby underground infrastructure, including shafts, pump chambers, and electrical installations.
