A washing plant is a mineral processing facility specifically designed to remove clay, soil, and other fine gangue materials from ore through the application of water and mechanical agitation. In bauxite mining, washing plants are critical because bauxite deposits in tropical regions are commonly coated in clay-rich laterite that must be removed before the ore can be efficiently processed through refining. The washing process typically involves scrubbers, rotary trommels, vibrating screens, and hydrocyclones operating in tandem to achieve effective liberation. In alluvial gold mining, washing plants — often referred to as wash plants — use high-pressure water jets and sluice boxes to dislodge and separate gold particles from gravel and sand. In iron ore mining, washing plants help remove alumina and silica impurities, improving the iron grade of the product. Diamond washing plants play an essential role in processing gravel-hosted diamond deposits, breaking down clay-bound material and passing the liberated fraction through screens and dense media separators to concentrate heavy minerals including diamonds. Washing plants can be stationary or mobile, the latter being particularly useful in alluvial and near-surface mining operations.
