Waste disposal in mining refers to the planned, engineered, and regulated placement of mining-generated waste materials — including waste rock, tailings, overburden, processing residues, and hazardous substances — in designated containment areas in a manner that minimises environmental impact and ensures long-term geotechnical stability. In bauxite mining, waste disposal includes the management of sandy residue and clay-rich overburden stripped from the ore zone, as well as the safe impoundment of red mud produced during alumina refining. Gold mining waste disposal is particularly complex due to the presence of cyanide-bearing tailings, which must be stored in specially lined, monitored facilities with controlled drainage systems. Iron ore mining operations dispose of significant volumes of low-grade overburden and fine tailings through engineered dumps and paste tailings facilities. Diamond mining, particularly open-pit kimberlite operations, generates large quantities of waste rock that require careful placement in dumps designed to prevent slope failure and surface water contamination. Modern waste disposal strategies in all mining sectors prioritise co-disposal, concurrent rehabilitation, and paste or filtered tailings technologies to reduce the environmental footprint and liability associated with mining waste.
