Waste Rock

Waste rock is the collectively term for the non-mineralised or sub-economic country rock that must be extracted and relocated to gain access to an ore body during open-cut or underground mining operations. In bauxite mining, waste rock includes lateritic overburden, clays, and saprolite that overlie the bauxite horizon and must be stripped and stockpiled, often later used for progressive rehabilitation of mined areas. In gold mining, waste rock is frequently the dominant material handled, with waste-to-ore stripping ratios sometimes exceeding 5:1 or even 10:1. Sulphide-bearing waste rock in gold mines is particularly problematic because exposure of pyrite and other iron sulphide minerals to oxygen and water triggers acid mine drainage, releasing toxic heavy metals including arsenic, lead, and cadmium. Iron ore waste rock includes banded iron formation country rock, shales, and dolerite intrusions, which are handled in enormous volumes given the scale of operations such as those in the Pilbara region of Australia. Diamond mine waste rock consists primarily of country rock surrounding kimberlite pipes, as well as barren kimberlite that was too deep or too low-grade to process economically. Managing waste rock requires engineered dump designs, acid rock drainage assessments, liner systems in acid-generating scenarios, drainage controls, and progressive rehabilitation to minimise long-term environmental impacts.
