Water Conservation

Water conservation in mining refers to the suite of strategies, technologies, and operational practices adopted to reduce the total volume of freshwater consumed by mining and mineral processing activities, thereby preserving water resources, reducing operating costs, and meeting increasingly stringent regulatory and stakeholder expectations. Mining operations across all commodity sectors — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining — are significant consumers of freshwater, particularly in arid and semi-arid environments where water scarcity poses both a business risk and a source of community conflict. In bauxite mining, water conservation initiatives include the adoption of dry-stack tailings for red mud disposal, which eliminates the need for large volumes of process water for impoundment, and the installation of water recovery systems in ore washing circuits. Gold mining operations conserve water through high-efficiency thickeners, closed-loop process circuits, and dry tailings filtration systems that reduce water losses to tailings facilities. Iron ore operations achieve conservation through paste tailings and water recovery from fine-particle settling thickeners. Diamond processing circuits increasingly use advanced water recycling systems that minimise fresh water intake. At the site level, water conservation plans include water audits, loss reduction programs, leak detection systems, and employee awareness training. Conservation targets are embedded in environmental management plans and reported to regulators and stakeholders.
