Water Distribution System

A water distribution system in mining is the integrated infrastructure comprising pipelines, pumping stations, storage reservoirs, pressure regulators, valves, flow meters, and control systems that collectively convey water from source points to all areas of demand within a mine site, processing facility, and associated infrastructure. The design and capacity of a water distribution system are determined by the site's water balance model, peak demand requirements, source water quality, elevation differences, and the layout of the mining operation. In bauxite mining and alumina refining, water distribution systems must handle corrosive caustic process liquors alongside fresh water, requiring the use of chemically resistant materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping and corrosion-resistant pump impellers. In gold mining operations, water distribution systems include dedicated lines for cyanide solution delivery, freshwater supply, and return water from tailings storage facilities, with each circuit maintained separately to prevent cross-contamination. Iron ore mine water distribution systems often incorporate high-capacity slurry pipelines that transport ore concentrates over long distances to port facilities, integrating water distribution and ore transport in a single system. Diamond mine water distribution systems are designed with security zoning, ensuring that process water entering sensitive diamond recovery areas is metered, monitored, and controlled. SCADA systems are widely used to provide real-time visibility and control of water distribution networks across large mine operations.
