Water Pump

A water pump in a mining context is a mechanical device used to move water or water-based slurries from one location to another by converting mechanical energy — typically supplied by an electric motor or diesel engine — into hydraulic energy that drives fluid flow against gravity, friction, and system pressure. Water pumps are among the most ubiquitous and operationally critical pieces of equipment in all categories of mining, including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations. In open-pit bauxite mines, submersible and vertical turbine pumps are used to dewater the pit floor, preventing flooding that would impede mining equipment operation. Centrifugal pumps are used throughout bauxite washing plants and alumina refineries to circulate process liquors, slurry, and water. In gold mining, high-pressure pumps deliver cyanide solution to heap leach pads and circulate pregnant solution through carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks. Slurry pumps handle abrasive tailings mixtures in the process plant. Iron ore operations rely on massive duty dewatering pumps to manage significant groundwater inflows into deep open pits, along with slurry transport pumps that move iron ore concentrate via long-distance pipelines. Diamond mining uses pumps for pit dewatering, dense media plant circulation, and slurry transport. Pump selection, maintenance, and energy efficiency optimisation are key concerns given that pumping represents one of the largest energy cost centres in most mining operations.
