Water recycling in mining is the process of treating and reintroducing previously used water back into the same or different stages of the mining and mineral processing cycle, thereby reducing the total volume of freshwater intake required. In the context of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, water recycling forms a core part of sustainable water stewardship programs. The process typically involves collecting process water from various sources — including mill discharge, tailings storage facility overflow, pit dewatering, and wash plant effluent — treating it to remove suspended solids, chemical contaminants, and pathogens, and then returning it to the process circuit. In gold mining, for instance, cyanide-bearing solutions used in heap leaching or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits are carefully recycled to retain the reagent value of dissolved gold and to prevent environmental release. Iron ore beneficiation plants heavily rely on water recycling to manage the large volumes used in wet screening, magnetic separation, and pellet washing. Diamond wash plants in arid regions such as the Kalahari or Namib require extremely efficient water recycling regimes due to severe freshwater scarcity. Effective water recycling programs reduce environmental liability, decrease operating costs, and demonstrate corporate social responsibility to regulators, investors, and surrounding communities.
