These ponds collect water from multiple sources, including direct precipitation, stormwater catchment from roads and disturbed areas, dewatering from open pits or underground workings, and decant water from tailings storage facilities. Water storage ponds are strategically located within the mine layout to minimize pumping distances and maximize gravity-fed distribution. The design of a water storage pond must account for evaporation losses, seepage rates, inlet and outlet hydraulics, freeboard requirements for flood events, and wave action erosion protection.
