Water supply in mining refers to the availability, sourcing, and provision of sufficient quantities of water of appropriate quality to meet all operational, processing, personnel, and environmental management needs of a mining project. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, securing an adequate and reliable water supply is one of the most fundamental requirements for project feasibility and ongoing operations. Water is consumed in enormous quantities in mining: ore washing and beneficiation, flotation circuits, hydrometallurgical leaching, dust suppression, slurry transport via pipelines, equipment cooling, potable water for workforce camps, and vegetation rehabilitation all require continuous water supply. Sources of water supply in mining include surface water abstraction from rivers, lakes, and reservoirs; groundwater extraction from aquifers; seawater desalination for coastal or island mining operations; captured rainfall and stormwater; and recycled process water. The adequacy of water supply is assessed through hydrological studies, water balance modeling, and long-term climatic projections, particularly in light of increasing climate variability. In many mining jurisdictions, water abstraction licenses or rights must be obtained from regulatory authorities, and maximum extraction volumes are stipulated to protect downstream water users and ecological base flows. Strategic water supply planning is increasingly important for mines in water-stressed regions such as the Atacama Desert, Pilbara, or the arid zones of sub-Saharan Africa where bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations are commonly located.
