A water treatment plant (WTP) in mining is a dedicated facility housing the equipment, process infrastructure, and control systems required to treat water to specified quality standards for discharge, reuse, or potable supply. In the context of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, water treatment plants are essential fixed or modular installations that process various streams including pit dewatering discharge, tailings facility decant water, process plant effluents, and stormwater runoff. The design and scale of a mine water treatment plant are determined by the volume and quality of influent water, the required effluent quality standards imposed by regulatory permits, and the budget and footprint constraints of the operation. A typical mine water treatment plant may incorporate primary treatment stages such as screening and sedimentation, secondary treatment including chemical dosing systems for pH correction, coagulation, and precipitation of metals, tertiary treatment such as media filtration or membrane bioreactors, and advanced treatment technologies such as reverse osmosis or UV disinfection where potable or near-potable standards are required. Sludge generated during the treatment process — containing precipitated metal hydroxides, flocculated solids, and chemical residues — must be managed separately, typically through dewatering and disposal in a permitted waste facility. Automated control systems monitor key parameters including flow rates, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity in real time, enabling rapid operational adjustments.
