Zinc Coating

Zinc Coating in the context of mining refers to the protective application of zinc metal or zinc-based compounds to steel equipment, infrastructure, structural components, and consumable items used in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations to prevent corrosion, extend service life, and reduce maintenance costs in harsh operating environments. Mining environments are highly corrosive due to exposure to moisture, acidic or alkaline process chemicals, saline groundwater, abrasive ore materials, and extreme temperatures — all of which accelerate the oxidation and deterioration of unprotected steel. Zinc coating (commonly applied through hot-dip galvanizing, electroplating, thermal spraying, or zinc-rich paint systems) creates both a barrier protection layer and cathodic protection — where zinc acts as a sacrificial anode that corrodes preferentially, protecting the underlying steel substrate. In mining, zinc-coated components include structural steelwork in processing plants, conveyor structures, pipe supports, handrails, grating, bolt fasteners, pump components, tailings pipeline systems, and site infrastructure. In gold mining, zinc also plays a direct metallurgical role in the Merrill-Crowe process, where zinc dust is used to precipitate gold and silver from pregnant cyanide leach solutions — a well-established and cost-effective gold recovery technique. Selection of appropriate zinc coating systems in mining is governed by exposure conditions, required coating life, and compliance with standards such as ISO 1461 for hot-dip galvanizing and ISO 12944 for corrosion protection of steel structures.
