Backfill

The process of returning excavated material, waste rock, or tailings into a mined-out void or pit to provide structural support, reduce surface subsidence, and aid in land rehabilitation. In underground mining, backfill maintains ground stability and allows safe extraction of adjacent ore. In open pit mining, backfill supports progressive rehabilitation. Materials used include waste rock, tailings, and cement-stabilised paste, depending on geotechnical requirements.
