Bench Stability
The geotechnical condition of an individual mining bench face and its resistance to failure through rockfall, sliding, or toppling. Bench stability is influenced by rock strength, geological discontinuities (joints, faults, bedding), blast damage, groundwater pressure, and bench geometry. Stability analysis involves kinematic analysis, limit equilibrium methods, and numerical modelling. In gold, iron ore, and diamond mines, maintaining bench stability through appropriate face angles, crest management, and blast design is essential for personnel safety and equipment protection.
