Berm Width

The horizontal width of a safety bench or berm constructed between successive slope faces in open pit mines or waste rock dumps. Berms serve as catchment areas for rockfalls, provide access for geotechnical inspection, reduce overall slope angle, and enhance long-term wall stability. Minimum berm widths are specified by regulatory authorities and geotechnical standards based on bench height and rock mass conditions. In gold, iron ore, and bauxite mines, adequate berm design is a fundamental element of pit slope engineering and safety management.
