Biodiversity Rehabilitation
The restoration of biological diversity and ecological function on mined land through revegetation with indigenous species, soil replacement, and habitat reconstruction following mining disturbance. In bauxite mining, biodiversity rehabilitation aims to restore pre-mining jarrah forest, woodland, or rainforest ecosystems, including understorey flora, soil biota, and fauna habitat. Success is measured by species richness, vegetation cover, ecological function, and self-sustainability. Biodiversity rehabilitation is a legal obligation and ethical commitment of mining operations in ecologically sensitive landscapes.
