Blank Sample
A quality control sample containing no significant concentrations of the analyte of interest, used in laboratory assay programs to detect cross-contamination or carry-over between samples. Blank samples are inserted at regular intervals into batches of assay samples submitted to analytical laboratories. Detection of elevated values in blank samples indicates contamination in the laboratory or sample preparation process, triggering investigation and potential reassaying. Blanks are an essential component of quality assurance and quality control programs in mineral exploration and mine grade control.
