Breakdown Maintenance
Unplanned maintenance activities performed in response to unexpected equipment failure or malfunction, aimed at restoring equipment to operational condition as rapidly as possible to minimise production downtime. Breakdown maintenance is generally more costly than preventive or predictive maintenance due to unplanned labour, emergency parts procurement, and production losses. In mining operations, breakdown maintenance is tracked as a key performance indicator, with high breakdown rates indicating inadequate preventive maintenance programs or equipment unreliability issues affecting production targets.
