Breakdown maintenance is generally more costly than preventive or predictive maintenance due to unplanned labour, emergency parts procurement, and production losses. In mining operations, breakdown maintenance is tracked as a key performance indicator, with high breakdown rates indicating inadequate preventive maintenance programs or equipment unreliability issues affecting production targets.
