The Société Minière de Boké (SMB) is Guinea’s largest bauxite producer and one of the world’s leading exporters of aluminum ore. Established in 2014, SMB has transformed Guinea’s mining sector through rapid operational growth, large-scale infrastructure investments, and an integrated logistics model that connects mining operations directly to international markets. In just over a decade, the company has become a cornerstone of Guinea’s economy and a major supplier to the global aluminum industry.
SMB operates through the SMB-Winning Consortium, a strategic partnership that combines mining, transportation, logistics, shipping, and industrial processing expertise. The consortium has played a decisive role in positioning Guinea as one of the world’s most important sources of bauxite, the primary raw material used in aluminum production.
Today, SMB is recognized not only for its production scale but also for its pioneering infrastructure developments, including the Dapilon-Santou Railway and modern river-port facilities that have significantly improved the efficiency of Guinea’s mining logistics network.
Ownership and Consortium Structure
SMB operates under a consortium structure that integrates the entire bauxite value chain from extraction to international delivery. The shareholders include:
- Winning International Group (40.5%), a Singapore-based maritime and logistics company specializing in bulk shipping and transshipment operations.
- United Mining Supply (UMS) (27%), a Franco-Guinean logistics and transportation company responsible for haulage, equipment supply, and local operational support.
- Shandong Weiqiao (22.5%), a subsidiary of China Hongqiao Group, one of the world’s largest aluminum producers and a guaranteed off-taker of SMB’s bauxite production.
- The Republic of Guinea (10%), representing the state’s equity participation in accordance with Guinea’s Mining Code.
This unique partnership combines international investment, industrial demand, logistics expertise, and national participation, creating one of the most successful mining consortiums in Africa.
Mining Operations
SMB’s mining activities are concentrated in the rich bauxite deposits of western Guinea, particularly within the Boké region, which hosts some of the largest bauxite reserves in the world. The company’s principal mining operations are located on the Dabiss and Malapouya plateaus in Boké Prefecture and have expanded into the Santou II and Houda plateaus in Télimélé Prefecture.
The company employs large-scale open-pit mining methods to extract high-grade bauxite for export markets. Through continuous investment in equipment, workforce development, and logistics infrastructure, SMB has achieved production levels unmatched by most bauxite producers worldwide.
Annual production currently exceeds 55 million tonnes, with long-term plans targeting approximately 70 million tonnes per year as infrastructure upgrades and operational expansions are completed.
Infrastructure and Logistics
One of SMB’s greatest competitive advantages is its fully integrated “Mine-to-Port” logistics model.
Recognizing that efficient transportation is essential for large-scale mining operations, the company has invested heavily in infrastructure that connects inland mining areas directly to export terminals.
A landmark achievement was the construction of the 125-kilometre Dapilon-Santou Railway, commissioned in 2021. The railway links the Santou and Houda mining deposits to the Dapilon terminal on the Rio Nuñez and represents the first major railway built in Guinea since the 1970s.
The railway significantly reduced dependence on truck transportation, improving efficiency while lowering emissions and dust generation.
SMB also operates two major river terminals:
- Dapilon Terminal
- Katougouma Terminal
At these facilities, bauxite is crushed, stockpiled, and loaded onto barges. The barges transport ore downriver to offshore transshipment zones, where cargo is transferred onto large Capesize vessels for shipment to international markets, particularly in Asia and increasingly Europe.
This integrated logistics chain enables SMB to move massive volumes of ore while maintaining competitive transportation costs.
Leadership
SMB’s growth has been guided by experienced international and Guinean business leaders.
Sun Xiushun, Chairman of Winning International Group and President of the SMB-Winning Consortium, is widely regarded as the architect of the consortium’s maritime logistics strategy. His expertise in shipping and bulk cargo transportation has been instrumental in developing SMB’s global export capabilities.
Fadi Wazni, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of United Mining Supply (UMS) and Chairman of SMB’s Board of Directors, has played a pivotal role in building relationships with government authorities, local communities, and international partners. His leadership has helped establish SMB as one of Guinea’s most influential mining companies.
Operational management is overseen by Frédéric Bouzigues, who leads day-to-day activities, infrastructure development, and corporate governance initiatives.
Strategic relations and stakeholder engagement are supported by Ismaël Diakité, a respected Guinean mining executive with extensive experience in the country’s extractive sector.
Economic Impact
SMB has become one of Guinea’s most significant economic contributors.
The company directly employs more than 4,000 people and supports over 10,000 additional jobs through contractors, logistics providers, and related service industries. More than 90 percent of the workforce consists of Guinean nationals, reflecting the company’s commitment to local employment and skills development.
Through taxes, royalties, infrastructure investments, and procurement spending, SMB contributes substantially to national economic growth and government revenues.
The company’s rapid expansion has been a major factor behind Guinea’s rise to become one of the world’s leading bauxite-producing nations and the largest supplier of bauxite to China.
Sustainability and Community Development
SMB recognizes that long-term success depends on maintaining strong relationships with local communities and minimizing environmental impacts.
The company supports community development through the SMB-Winning Foundation, which funds projects in education, healthcare, water access, and rural electrification. Initiatives include the construction of schools and health centres, distribution of solar energy systems, and provision of clean water to communities located near mining operations.
Environmental management remains a priority. The transition from extensive truck haulage to railway transportation has significantly reduced dust emissions and traffic impacts along mining corridors. Ongoing investments are also being made to modernize river terminal operations and improve the overall environmental performance of logistics systems.
Future Outlook
SMB continues to pursue an ambitious growth strategy focused on operational efficiency, infrastructure modernization, and sustainable development.
The company is implementing a major investment programme valued at approximately US$1 billion to expand mining capacity, enhance logistics infrastructure, and improve environmental performance. These investments are expected to support future production targets exceeding 70 million tonnes annually.
Beyond bauxite, the consortium’s expertise has also been applied to the development of Guinea’s world-class Simandou iron ore project through Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS), further reinforcing its position as one of the most influential mining groups operating in West Africa.
As global demand for aluminum and critical minerals continues to grow, Société Minière de Boké is expected to remain a central player in Guinea’s mining sector and an important supplier to international commodity markets for years to come.
