Cost Benchmarking

Cost benchmarking in mining is the systematic process of comparing the operational costs and cost performance indicators of a mining operation against those of peer operations, industry standards, or best-practice comparators, with the objective of identifying cost inefficiencies, setting performance targets, and driving continuous improvement in cost management. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining — all highly capital- and operationally-intensive industries — cost benchmarking is a critical management tool used by mining companies, boards of directors, investors, and financial analysts to assess whether a mine is competitive in terms of its cost of production relative to its peers and relative to the commodity price environment. Cost benchmarking studies are typically conducted using standardised cost reporting frameworks that allow meaningful, like-for-like comparisons. The most widely used framework in the mining industry is the World Gold Council's (WGC) All-In Sustaining Cost (AISC) metric for gold, which captures cash costs, sustaining capital, corporate overhead, and royalties in a single, comparable figure. Similarly, iron ore producers often report C1 cash costs (direct mining, processing, and transport costs) and All-In costs (including depreciation, corporate overhead, and capital expenditure). In bauxite and alumina, production costs are typically reported per tonne of alumina produced. Diamond producers benchmark cost per carat. Benchmarking data is collected from public company reports, industry databases (such as Wood Mackenzie, S&P Global Market Intelligence, and Brook Hunt), and peer-group surveys. The benchmarking process involves collecting cost data, normalising it for site-specific factors (such as ore grade, ore hardness, remote location, and energy costs), plotting operations on a cost curve, identifying where the operation ranks relative to its peers, and using the analysis to set targets for cost reduction initiatives in areas such as energy management, labour productivity, contractor management, consumables procurement, and maintenance strategy.
