Emission Reduction Strategy

An Emission Reduction Strategy is the overarching, long-term framework and set of guiding principles adopted by a mining company — across bauxite, gold, iron ore, or diamond operations — to systematically and sustainably reduce its environmental footprint, specifically in terms of atmospheric pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike a specific program with defined targets and timelines, a strategy provides the organizational vision, policy direction, and strategic choices that shape how the company will approach emission reduction over the medium to long term (typically 10–30 years). It aligns emission reduction ambitions with the company's broader business strategy, capital allocation priorities, and regulatory environment.

A comprehensive emission reduction strategy identifies the company's key emission sources and hotspots, evaluates a portfolio of potential reduction levers (including energy efficiency, fuel switching, electrification, process innovation, and carbon capture), assesses the cost-effectiveness and technical feasibility of each option, and prioritizes those offering the greatest impact per dollar invested. For iron ore miners, a strategy might identify transitioning to hydrogen-based direct reduction ironmaking as a long-term decarbonization pathway. For gold miners, replacing diesel generators at remote operations with solar-plus-battery microgrids offers near-term emission reduction. Bauxite and alumina producers might pursue electrification of calcination processes. The strategy also addresses carbon offsets, stakeholder engagement, supply chain emissions (Scope 3), and climate risk disclosure, while remaining flexible enough to adapt to evolving science, technology, and regulatory landscapes.
