Greenfield Project

A Greenfield Project in the mining industry refers to the development of an entirely new mine or processing facility in an area where no previous mining or processing infrastructure exists. It encompasses all phases from initial feasibility assessment through design, permitting, construction, commissioning, and ramp-up to full production. Greenfield projects are among the most capital-intensive and complex undertakings in the resources sector, typically requiring investments ranging from hundreds of millions to several billion dollars and taking five to fifteen or more years from discovery to first production.

Unlike brownfield expansions, which benefit from existing infrastructure, experienced workforces, and established community relationships, greenfield projects must build everything from scratch — including access roads, power supply, water infrastructure, processing plants, tailings storage facilities, accommodation camps, and port facilities in the case of bulk commodities such as iron ore and bauxite.

The development of a greenfield iron ore project in a remote region such as the Simandou mountains of Guinea or the Pilbara in Australia involves enormous logistical and engineering challenges. Gold greenfield projects in West Africa or the Pacific often require resettlement of communities and extensive environmental and social impact assessments. Diamond greenfield projects must demonstrate economic viability through bulk sampling before committing to full-scale mine development.

Greenfield projects carry significant technical, financial, regulatory, and geopolitical risks but offer the potential for substantial returns when successful.
